Year 5 Bathurst Excursion
On the 11th of March, the fifth-graders of Al-Faisal College went to the Bathurst Goldfields. As we arrived at school, we set off excitedly to our destination. On our drive we stopped at Katoomba Falls for breakfast. We also looked at the scenic view of the Blue Mountains and the Three Sisters.
After our arrival we had a short recess and were divided into two groups; 'Bus 1' and 'Bus 2'. Shortly afterwards, we began the tour.
Our guides, Barry and Bert showed us through the Gold Diggings Museum, The Blacksmiths Shop and Gold Mines. Here we learnt many things about gold and also gold miners, their lives and the labours. After being shown a Chinese temple and settlement, we had our lunch and prayed. In a rush we rose to continue our interesting expedition.
We met Karen; Barry's wife who told us about her life on the goldfields. She showed us around her house, explaining the names and uses of objects in her house. Next we took part in a number of hands-on experiences. This included bowling, tug-of-war, throwing a horse shoe through a hoop, making mud bricks and baking delicious dampers.
Finally, we went panning for gold at the local lake. Unfortunately, I didn’t have much luck it finding enough gold to buy a brand you house, car or even a bike! We ended the day of visiting the souvenir shop. It was getting dark so we quickly ate dinner and departed for school.
Altogether it was a great and enjoyable, full of fun for everyone!
